This is the category where the technical gap between a professional and a phone is widest, and where guests already know it. Everyone has tried to photograph a shark through acrylic and got their own reflection. Everyone has tried to shoot a lion from a vehicle and got a blurred shape behind a window frame. The failure is so common that the successful print sells itself.

The work is mostly about controlling reflection and timing. Shooting through acrylic means a lens hood against the glass, an angle that kills the reflection of the gallery lighting, and waiting for the animal to be in the third of the tank that is actually lit. Animal encounters run to a schedule, so a photographer is positioned before the encounter starts rather than arriving with the crowd.

Consent needs more care in this category than anywhere else, because encounters are the moments people most want photographed and also the moments where a keeper, a handler and other guests are in frame. We ask before the shot, not after, we do not photograph a child without the accompanying adult agreeing, and a guest who says no is not photographed and not approached again.

Operationally this is an indoor category, which removes the heat problem and replaces it with a space problem. Galleries are narrow, walkways cannot be blocked, and a print point has to sit where it does not interrupt the flow of a one way route.
